'Cowboy' boiler fitters are putting thousands at risk
Thousands of Londoners' lives are being put at risk by rogue boiler fitters, the gas safety watchdog warned today.
Seventy-nine per cent of boilers installed by 'cowboy' firms in the capital were deemed a risk or "immediately dangerous".
Gas Safe Registre urged homeowners to use qualified fitters and report those trading illegally.
The warning comes as the Department of Health revealed that large numbers of people are being treated in hospital for low-level carbon monoxide poisoning. Over a year, accidental carbon monoxide poising led to more than 50 deaths as 4000 people were hospitalised.
GSR, which monitors gas fitters, says there are about 7,500 cowboys nationwide who do 250,000 illegal jobs a year. It says Londoners are more at risk from dangerous boiler installations than anywhere else in the country.
Ross McTaggart, GSR's head of field operations, said "We need to stop these people and the only way to do it is with the help of the consumer."
"These trades are putting people's lives in danger. The primary issue arising from illegal fittings is carbon monoxide poisoning but a boiler installed illegally can also cause explosions or fires. We need to raise awareness of this and urge people to make sure they check a fitter's credentials."
As part of Gas Safety Week GSP is urging Londoners to report rogue trades and make sure they hire qualified engineers who carry a Gas Safe ID card.
West Dulwich resident Marcia Morgan had a huge gas leak in her home after rogue builders installed the wrong kind of boiler in 2008.
The freelance stylist called in a gas inspector this year. She said: "I was horrified when he immediately swiched off the boiler saying it could have blown the side of my house off."
Ms Morgan added: "My builder appeared to have the right credentials but he obviously wasn't qualified"

9 Sept 2011 - Project Completion - Notting Hill, London
Recently completed Interior Refurbishment project of two bedroom flat in Notting Hill, London.
Please take a look at our "Before" , "During" and "After" Pictures and our Client's Testimonial below:
Video testimonial here.

1. How did you find the initial quote, price and quote presentation?
I was extremely satisfied with the approach to preparing the initial quote. Steve was very friendly and very thorough in his assessments. The quote was by far the best presented and most well considered of all the quotes I received. We worked through three revisions of the quote to come to an agreed programme of works.
2. Were you happy with the Quality of the work?
The quality of the work was extremely good. In particular I would like to commend the carpentry that was undertaken which was incredibly well done. The final finish of all items was superb and to the agreed specification. If any issues arose, Miros was always quick to contact me for a discussion on the best way forward.
3. Were you satisfied with the work of the site foreman?
Ivan was a brilliant and friendly foreman. I used to regularly visit the site unannounced and he would always show me how things had progressed and if anything had happened that needed any further discussion or decisions.
4. Were you satisfied with our initial response and visits?
Steve and Miros were always on time for site visits and helpful and thorough in their assessments. They also were as accommodating as could be to my neighbours (which is always important)
5. Was the job completed on programme and as in the contract?
The job was completed as per the specification to an extremely high quality. Any minor issues that were discovered were quickly (within the hour) rectified. The job was actually completed ahead of time which was both welcome and extremely helpful given I could move home sooner!
6. How did the project improve your home?
Not only is the flat in excellent condition, but it has been quite transformational with many rooms feeling like a brand new flat. Having a complete rewire and replumb has also meant the flat is more efficient and cheaper to live in. Based on a local estate agent's assessment, the expenditure would more than easily be recouped if I were to sell - not that I want to.
7. Please give us your General Testimonial:
Generally I would recommend Avalon to anyone. They were by far and away the best contractor at the quote stage - Steve was brilliant. Throughout the project I knew I could always contact Miros and Ivan if there were any issues and they were always resolved in an extremely timely manner. For the job to be completed ahead of time and pretty much exactly on budget was brilliant. For any other refurbishment work I would not hesitate to use Avalon again and will gladly recommend them.

How to add value to your home
The main function of our house of course is to be a home not an investment, but with one eye on making our homes as comfortable as possible, the other eye remains focussed on the fluctuating property market and how to get the best price when we eventually do decide to move.
Here we offer advice on the best areas to concentrate on if you want to add value to your home and attact buyers, then we also suggest a few 'embellishments' which could put potential buyers off!
What adds value to your home
Investing in your home means it can become the most attractive in the road, it will get most attention from buyers when decide to move and will usually sell more quickly and for more money. Some improvement projects will offer a more clear-cut return than others, for example central heating almost always pays for itself and is nearly always guarantees to leave you with a profit when you sell. Here are a few more suggestions for good, sound investments in your property:
* Loft conversion - converting a loft to make an extra room is said to be the favourite project and can add a whopping 12.5 percent to your selling price.
* Extension - this is the second most popular project adding an extra 11 percent.
* A conservatory - adding one of these can add a clear six percent.
* New kitchen - a new, small and functional kitchen could cook up an extra 4.6 percent.
* Central heating - this could add a cosy 3.4 percent to your selling price
* New bathroom - this could flush out an extra 2.8 percent.
* Redecorating - get the paintbrushes out - this could get you an extra 2.6 percent.
* New driveway - slope off with an extra 2.2 percent.
* Decking or patio - relax with a cool 2 percent extra.
* Go green - although eco home improvements might not add a huge amount to the sale price of your home, we know they reduce your fuel bill and buyers like to see resource-saving devices.
Don't go there!
Consider any high-cost, low-value renovation or addition carefully. By all means embellish you home with all the luxuries you can imagine to make it into the home of your dreams, but extravagance is not always good. We feel that this little lot may just make your potencial buyers think again.
* Gadgets and gimmicks - Is it a really good idea to splash out on a pricey cappuccino maker if the boiler doesn't work?
* Designer fitting - Nice to have but not essential - look for copies at your local DIY store.
* Eccentric decor - This will do you no favour when you come to sell, and in any case it's frequently hard to live with even if you are the one responsible for it.
* Swimming pools - A mammoth expense and a headache to maintain - especially if it's outdoors.
* Knocking down walls to make bigger bedrooms - It's not size that matters here, in the UK housing market, it is the number of bedrooms that really counts not the square footage.
* Home gyms - As most gym membership fees are paid religiously, enthusiasm for the actual work-out soon wanes. Likewise a home gym.
